Recycled Robot Project
In modern times we are surrounded by digital devices which makes our life convenient. Be that as it may, our accessibility to technology is having an effect in our environment due to e-waste such as heavy metals, plastic, incinerator bottom ash (IBA) that are overgrowing in our landfill. How we recycle and reuse e-waste is an issue we need to address now so we may pass on a clean and healthy environment to our next generation.
This year I was approached with an art project where the class assignment was to create robotic ornament for an annual Christmas Tree sale. The criteria was to reuse and upcycle unwanted electronic parts and transform it into an art work. The teacher asked her community for donation containing undesirable digital equipments, old computers, and any thing that can be dissembled into parts.
Everything from RAMs, keyboard keys, fans, heat sinks, you name it all was for the taking. Then she took these pieces into her classroom and the magic happened.
The kids made wild crazy robots out of them! Fueled by imagination and equipped with binding-agents they breathed and assembled new life from these unused parts. In the eyes of these creators some of the robots had purpose such as a role of a helper, some were pets, some even explored deep space! The colors, expressions, postures are so lively and renewing. These collection teaches us that with a little bit of ingenuity, intention, and artistry we can easily convert waste into building element rather than going to the landfill.
